Let there be…

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” [Genesis 1:3 NIV]

On one of my morning walks, I noticed a dog peeing. (Not very spiritual is it?) Anyway, my ever-imaginative brain began to picture God at a big drafting desk, designing a dog and discussing with Jesus and the Holy Spirit its functionality–how best to operate its waste disposal system (ie urinate), working out design flaws etc.

My imaginings were halted when I suddenly thought, “but that is the human way”. We draw pictures, do mathematical and/or scientific equations to calculate efficiency, experiment and fix flaws–all before we come up with a well-functioning prototype. Just like the inventor Thomas Edison, when he was working on the electric light bulb. Many, many designs and experiments were completed and unsuccessful before he perfected it.

When God creates, He speaks and it is. In that one phrase “Let there be…” is the concept, the design, the perfection and the accomplishment. In one thought, breath and simple statement. Amazing!

But even more mind-blowing is the fact that He speaks those kind of words over us. “Let her be…blessed.” “Let him be…healed.” “Let them be…free.” He speaks and it is. Just like that.
