The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” [Matt 13:44 NIV]
In the novel I am working on, I have to do a lot of research on the Victorian gold-rush of the 1850s. It is astounding how many thousands of people left their homes, families, lives and even countries to search for that elusive fortune of gold.
They voyaged across the oceans, braving stormy seas and long months aboard ship. They traversed barely charted lands, facing hardships such as mud bogs, dehydration and miles upon miles of travel on foot. They risked their very lives with no guarantee they would succeed in their pursuit of gold.
It made me think. The Kingdom of Heaven is a treasure worth far more than a fortune in gold. It is a prize of untold beauty and riches, and it is everlasting. Would we sacrifice everything we have? Would we risk our very lives in pursuit of this treasure–a treasure which is a guaranteed certainty? Mmm…now there is a tough question.
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” [Matt 19:29 NIV]
