Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” [1 Corinthians 9:24 NIV]
To run a race, in particular a marathon, you need to run efficiently. You need to conserve energy as much as you can. If you ran with heavy clothing on, it would work against you. If you carried a backpack full of your belongings it would hold you back and wear you out unnecessarily.
Yet, in our Christian journey, which is much like running a marathon at times, we tend to carry around as much baggage as we can–past hurts (this is a biggie), future worries, present tensions–all of the things which can hinder us from moving freely. Imagine if we could throw off these things and just run, light on our feet, with the breeze in our hair–pure joy.
Well, we can. We can cast our cares on Him, as in my blog last week. Jesus says: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” [Matt 11:29-30 NIV] So, let us run without allowing the past to hold us back.
