In everything set them an example by doing what is good.” [Titus 2:7 NIV]
I just began reading the story of Esther yesterday and at the beginning of this story, Queen Vashti is banished from King Xerxes presence because she did not come to him when she was summoned. Now, it seems to me that the issue wasn’t so much that she didn’t want to come to the king, but that the leaders and officials of the time were concerned her actions would be mirrored amongst the commoners, beginning a trend of women disrespecting their husbands.
People in the public eye are often looked up to and emulated — celebrities, sports stars, governmental leaders — they all have people watching them. They might not like to think of themselves as role models, but they are.
But, people are watching you and I also. Whether it is our children, our colleagues, our extended family or even our friends, someone is looking up to us. Therefore, we have a responsibility, especially as Christians, to be the best role models we can, emulating Christ’s character here on earth. I’m not saying we should be perfect — we will all make mistakes from time to time — but I believe we should do the best we can. We are, after all, representing the King of Kings.
“Say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” [Titus 2:12-13 NIV]
Thanks for that great and timely reminder Amanda! Our children ARE always watching and deserve to see Jesus in and through our lives.
Blessings to you dear friend XX
It is so true that children do what we do more than they do what we say. It is important to teach them the right way, but more importantly we have to be living it first.
