Three Things … Maybe Four

“There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand:the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a young woman.” [Proverbs 30:18-19 NIV]

I love the Sayings of Agur in Proverbs 30. He has a very succinct but beautifully poetic way of putting things. In particular, the verse above. It is true, these things are amazing.

To watch an eagle soaring high in the sky with barely a flutter of its wings, so majestic and free, makes you wish you could fly yourself. The way a snake slithers over rocks as though they were a smooth, flat surface, is kind of creepy but awesome at the same time. And the way a ship stays afloat, even with waves churning beneath, tossing it to and fro, is pretty amazing too.

But, the way of a man with a maiden — there is something no-one really understands. How does attraction really happen? What draws people together in such a beautiful companionship? It is truly symbolic of the way the Lord draws us to Himself, a picture of the intimate relationship He wants with His people.

In fact, all these things are a reflection of our Creator and His creativity. When it comes down to it, who can look at Him without being truly amazed?

  1. I’m with you, Amanda… and the writer of the proverb. Attraction IS a mystery. So does that mean when we writer= romance, at heart it’s also a profound mystery? I would like to think so…. 😉 Great post.

    • Definitely a profound mystery. Attraction and romance never get dull and boring, do they? Like Lionel Richie said in his Aussie interview recently, ‘love is the one thing that never goes out of style.’
