About the Book

She was invisible to those who should have loved her.

After the Great War, Abby Fraser returns to India with her small son, where her husband is stationed with the British army. She has longed to go home to the land of glittering palaces and veiled women . . . but Nick has become a cruel stranger. It will take more than her American pluck to survive.

Major Geoff Richards, broken over the loss of so many of his men in the trenches of France, returns to his cavalry post in Amritsar. But his faith does little to help him understand the ruthlessness of his British peers toward the Indian people he loves. Nor does it explain how he is to protect Abby Fraser and her child from the husband who mistreats them.

Amid political unrest, inhospitable deserts, and Russian spies, tensions rise in India as the people cry for the freedom espoused by Gandhi. Caught between their own ideals and duty, Geoff and Abby stumble into sinister secrets . . . secrets that will thrust them out of the shadows and straight into the fire of revolution.

Amanda’s Review

I have to admit I read Shadowed in Silk after Captured by Moonlight, so in the wrong order. But it didn’t really matter too much. It was great to read the story of characters that were only mentioned a little in the second novel. They both can be read as stand alone novels.

Once again I was transported to the exotic setting of India amidst the turmoil of political upheaval. That backdrop gave the story great tension and kept me turning the pages. And I loved the way the romance built between the main characters. There were enough twists and turns to keep me satisfied until I put Shadowed in Silk down with a sigh of contentment.

I look forward to the third instalment of the Twilight of the British Raj series and I recommend Christine’s novels to anyone who loves a good romance with a bit of suspense and a different setting.

An Unholy Communion

by

Donna Fletcher Crow

About the Author:

“Donna Fletcher Crow has created her own niche within the genre of clerical mysteries.” – Kate Charles, author of Deep Waters

First light, Ascension morning. From the top of the tower at the College of Transfiguration, voices rise in song.

Felicity’s delight turns to horror when a black-robed body hurtles over the precipice and lands at her feet.

Her fiancé Father Antony recognizes the corpse as Hwyl Pendry, a former student, who has been serving as Deliverance Minister in a Welsh diocese. The police ignore the strange emblem of a double-headed snake clutched in the dead man’s hand, labelling the death a suicide. But Hwyl’s widow is convinced otherwise, and pleads for Felicity and Antony to help her uncover the truth.

Matters grow murkier as Felicity and Antony, leading a youth pilgrimage through rural Wales, encounter the same sinister symbol as they travel. Lurking figures follow them. Then a body is found face-down in a well …

“Donna Fletcher Crow gives us, in three extremely persuasive dimensions, the world that Dan Brown merely sketches.” – Timothy Hallinan, author of The Queen of Patpong

Heidi Glick – Dog Tags

From the Back Cover:

DogTags_h11265_300 (2)When disabled ex-Marine Mark Graham reconnects with his best friend’s sister, he finds himself falling in love. But Beth Martindale’s presence is a constant reminder of events he’d rather forget. Mark wants to move forward, but the secrets surrounding her brother’s death as well as his own confinement to a wheelchair threaten to tear them apart.

When a psychopath who calls himself The Knight fixates on Beth, Mark is determined to give her the protection he failed to give her brother on the battlefield, yet he discovers that a wheelchair isn’t the only impediment he has to keeping Beth safe.

Will terror win or can Mark find the strength of mind and body to rescue Beth and find his own redemption?

Amanda’s Review

So, here I was thinking I’d figured out who the bad guy was within the first few chapters. But then, further on, I was not so sure. And I was completely wrong of course – led up the garden path so to speak – which is a good thing I guess, when it comes to this genre. All this to say that I really enjoyed this Romantic Suspense from Heidi Glick. It kept me guessing till almost the end, and needless to say therefore, kept me up turning pages.

But it wasn’t just the suspense that caught my interest. I’m a sucker for romance and the tension between Beth and Mark also had me hooked. I loved that the male lead was in a wheelchair – something you don’t see every day – and that he still managed to be the hero in spite of it.

This novel also reminds us to trust God with our future as well as our present and even our past, but without being preachy. It flowed naturally as part of the characters’ lives as they worked through their struggles.

All in all a very satisfying read. Recommended to those who enjoy romantic suspense.

Christine Lindsay

About the Author:

Christine Lindsay writes historical inspirational novels with strong love stories, and she takes pride in her Irish roots. Her great grandfather and grandfather worked as riveters in the Belfast shipyard, one of those ships her ancestors helped build was the Titanic. On her mother’s side it was stories of ancestors who served in the British Cavalry in India that seeded Christine’s long-time fascination with the British Raj and became the stimulus for her Twilight of the British Raj series.

The Pacific coast of Canada, about 200 miles north of Seattle, is Christine’s home where she lives with her husband, David, and they enjoy the visits from their adult children and grandchildren. Like a lot of authors, Christine’s chief editor is her cat.

About the Book

Prisoners to their own broken dreams…

After a daring rescue goes awry, the parched north of India grows too hot for nurse Laine Harkness and her friend Eshana. The women flee to the tropical south…and run headlong into their respective pasts.

Laine takes a new nursing position at a plantation in the jungle, only to discover that her former fiancé is the owner…and that Adam has no more to say to her now than he did when he crushed her years ago. Why, then, is she still drawn to him, and to the tiger cub he is raising?

Eshana, captured by her traditional uncle and forced once more into the harsh Hindu customs of mourning, doubts whether freedom will ever again be in her future, much less the forbidden love that had begun to whisper to her. Is faith enough to live on? Or is her Savior calling her home?

Amid cyclones and epidemics, clashing faiths and consequences of the war, will the love of the True Master give hope to these searching hearts?

Amanda’s Review

Captured by Moonlight indeed captured me. It was a wonderful experience to be able to slip into another culture and another time period and be caught up in an enthralling tale. I had trouble putting this novel down. From the descriptions of the landscape in India to the palpable tension between the characters, I was hooked.

Christine Lindsay gave me an insight into another time and other religions as I read, without feeling like I was being taught at all. I think that also, having missionaries in my present family and ancestry (in India a few generations back even), there is something that resonates with me in a story involving the work of missions.

This story also spoke a message to me in my current situation, and I love that sense of the Holy Spirit speaking to me through a work of fiction. I found myself encouraged and enriched without being preached at.

If you love a romance with lots of tension and an exotic setting, this book is for you. I look forward to reading more of Christine’s work in the future.

Duty demands he deny his feelings, but his heart longs for the mysterious beauty. With both their futures at stake, will Lizzie be able to keep up her façade? Or will she find the strength to share her secret and put her faith in true love?

Amanda’s Review:

What can I say? I adored this book from debut author Jennifer Delamere. It had all the elements that, for me, make a great read. An Heiress at Heart is a heart-stirring romance, with a dash of suspense and a few surprising twists. It is set in Victorian London with reflections of Australia and carries within its pages a message of hope.

For me, the characters stood out on the page. A noble and honourable hero, a leading lady with a good heart who’s lost her way a little, a nasty villain and a colourful supporting cast kept me turning pages late into the night. I especially enjoyed the somewhat flippant James who provided some comic relief with his witty remarks. I do hope to see more of him in the continuing series of Love’s Grace, because I will definitely be reading more from this author.

I recommend this novel to all lovers of Historical Romance. You won’t be disappointed!

About the Book:

Amy Welsh knew when she came back to the small Washington town of Goose Bay she’d eventually run into her high school sweetheart—the one who broke her heart seventeen years ago. Only Quentin Macmillan isn’t the boy she remembered. He could potentially be everything she’s ever dreamed of. But remembering the past reminds Amy that she and Quentin aren’t a pair of teenagers in the bloom of first love. Letting him into her life resurfaces all the hurt she’s tried to ignore. Forgiveness isn’t as simple—or easy—as it sounds, especially after Quentin and Amy discover his teenage daughter has been manipulating their feelings. If Amy can open her heart to healing, she’ll find the future God prepared for her.

Amanda’s Review:

I enjoyed No Substitute. At times it reminded me of my first love as a teenager and the kinds of emotions that went with that. I found the characterisation very realistic, particularly with teenagers as well as adults. The plot also was very believable. Over all No Substitute was a sweet, heart-warming read, and I recommend it to those who enjoy a romance.

Dana Pratola – Descended – Jett

From the Back Cover:

descended_cover_final_smallWhen a reclusive businessman takes an interest in Haven’s artwork, she knows it’s an answer to prayer. But Jett Cestone is an enigma with a disconcerting connection to the young women in his employ. He’s by far the most unusual man she’s ever met.

Haven is the most interesting woman to ever cross Jett’s path. But she’s too naïve and pure to learn what goes on in his home. Too bad he wants her more than he’s wanted anyone or anything in his life.

Amanda’s Review:

All I can say is WOW! Although I didn’t read this novel in one sitting, I easily could have. It had me in a tight grip from the first pages and I did end up reading most of a night away. I just wanted to know more about this Jett character — who was he? Even when I finished the book, it stayed with me for over a week. I loved it to bits.

I don’t want to give anything away from the plot, so it will suffice to say that Dana Pratola did a fantastic job at portraying real characters with real struggles, and the chemistry between the Haven and Jett kept me turning pages. And the ideas behind this story were just that little bit different from the norm that it held my interest all the way.

I can’t wait to read more of this authors work. Recommended for those who love contemporary romance with a twist.

About the Author:

Author2Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. He is merciful and gracious and loves me beyond all human reason. He loves you the same way. He gave me a passion to write, and I believe if the words I write turn a reader’s heart toward Christ, I am fulfilling my destiny. A lofty goal? Sure. That’s one of many reasons I need God in my life all day, every day. Another is my family. I’ve been married to my sweetheart for 26 years. We live in New Jersey with our three spectacular children, all of whom are destined to make wide and colorful splashes on this planet.

I write Christian Romance. Not the kind with the women buttoned to the neck and the men daring no more than to hold her hand after a long courtship, but the contemporary kind. I don’t write explicit sex scenes but my characters have real desires, struggles and choices to make. A lot of the time they make the wrong ones. No subject is prohibited but good always triumphs.

L.D. Taylor – Motive Games

From the Back Cover:

motivegamessmallWhen practically everyone you know hated your Dad, where do you start your search for his murderer?

Phil Roland is sure his dad’s death wasn’t an accident. Thousands of adults had hated him for designing a popular, but controversial, first–person shooter. Thousands of kids had hated him because he’d walked away with the rights to the game, before a sequel could be made. Now Phil’s got a plan to prove his dad didn’t just fall down a set of stairs. But getting that proof means getting in at Motive Games, getting Dad’s eccentric detective friend to help him investigate, and getting past his own grief.

In this fast-paced thriller, inspired by The Song of Roland, real-world technology collides head on with real-life dilemmas. The result is a high-tech murder mystery with heart, soul… and ultimately, hope.

Amanda’s Review:

High-tech murder mystery is exactly what this book is. Although aimed for younger readers, I thoroughly enjoyed following Phil’s journey as he tried to find out what really happened to his dad.

I probably only understood about half of the computer/gaming lingo, but it was enough to keep me on track with what was happening. And happily, if you don’t understand it all, there is a glossary at the end of each chapter. A true gaming enthusiast would have fun following all the links to more information — unless of course, they already know it all.

Lisa Taylor did a great job at portraying teen characters as well as some interesting adult characters as well. Motive Games kept me turning pages, particularly as it built to the climax. Recommended for teens and lovers of the gaming world.

About the Author:

lisataylorAfter graduating from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada with a BA in English Literature and History, LD Taylor began a career in marketing for the 3D graphics and animation software industry. A few years before her family’s immigration to New Zealand in 2010, she decided to spearhead a family project that would combine one of her teenage sons’ interests (video games) with one of her own (mystery novels). In 2011 the resulting manuscript, Motive Games, won the Caleb Prize in the Young Adult category. Today, Taylor and her family live like pioneers in New Zealand’s Northland, taunting their family back in Canada with photos of exotic locally grown fruits and snowless winters.

My Top 5 Reads for 2012

Since I don’t actually get to read a huge quantity of books every year, I will limit my favourites to five. Funnily enough that is the exact number of books that stood out for me above the rest last year for one reason or another — either extremely inspiring, toe-curling entertainment, or deeply challenging. So, without further ado, here they are (in no particular order):

front cover (2)

Jo Wanmer’s book, Though the Bud be Bruised, rocked my world — to put it bluntly. You can read my review here.

TheMerchant'sDaughtercoverI loved, loved, loved The Merchant’s Daughter — especially since Beauty and the Beast is one of my favourite fairy tales. You can read my review here.

Stories of Australia's Christian Heritage by Elizabeth Kotlowski

It was so inspiring to read about the godly characters who explored and pioneered this Great South Land in Stories of Australia’s Christian Heritage. Read the review here.

11834189Redeeming the Rogue was another novel that hit all the right buttons for me. For my full review, see here.

childofthemistAnd of course, I can’t go past a great medieval romance. Child of the Mist turned me into a fan of Kathleen Morgan. Here is my review.

Are any of these on your favourites list? If not, what was your top read for 2012?

Kathleen Morgan – Child of the Mist

From the Back Cover:

In the harsh Scottish highlands of 1564, superstitions threaten a truce . . . a traitor plans his attack . . and a new love is born.

An arranged betrothal was never the course Anne MacGregor imagined her life would take. Yet when her father explains that her cooperation is the only hope for peace, Anne sees no other choice. Even one year of commitment to Niall Campbell, after all, would win a long-sought truce between the feuding families.

But as Anne soon discovers, peace is not so easily achieved. Before she even arrives at her new home, rumors about her abound and her safety is threatened. Meanwhile, Niall’s ascension as leader of his clan is in jeopardy, as a traitor works to bring about his downfall.

As Niall and Anne begin to see beyond each other’s defenses, love takes them by surprise. But will it be enough to defeat their foes? Or will the truce be broken, their lives forfeit, and war return to their beloved land?

Amanda’s Review:

How I love a medieval romance! And this one drew me right into the time period and kept me turning the pages. Kathleen Morgan showed the Scottish imagery so well, I could hear their accents strongly in my head while I read and for a long time after.

Child of the Mist revealed the strong superstition of that time when a woman who didn’t quite follow the norms could be classified as a witch with little evidence on which to base the accusation on.  And of course, the man falling in love with her had a terrible time convincing people of her innocence, not matter that he was the clan chieftain.

There was plenty of intrigue and romance to keep me riveted throughout this novel. I feel like I have found a treasure in Kathleen Morgan and I can’t wait to read more of her work. Child of the Mist is a great read and highly recommended.

About the Author:

Kathleen was born in sunny Long Beach, California, one of four daughters of a career Army officer.

As a former Army nurse with a master’s degree in counseling, she has lived in Germany, Korea, Maryland, Texas, Virginia, Louisiana, Florida, Washington, D.C., Alabama, California, and Colorado.

She is married to a retired Army helicopter pilot and is the mother of two sons-one deceased- and stepmother to another son and a daughter, both of whom have been very busy making her a grandmother.

In her free time, Kathleen likes to quilt, play the Celtic harp, and be companion and caretaker to an aging English cocker spaniel. She is also a companion and the wifely caretaker to her husband, who is not quite so aged.
