God is not a god of adequacy. I think many of us believe He can and will meet our needs if we are faithful, but do we ever believe more of Him than that? Do we ask for more? Can we expect more?

I believe God is a god of abundance. He wants to bless us to overflowing.

When I read in the Old Testament about the promises the Lord made to His nation, Israel, they were promises of prosperity — abundant crops with leftovers at the end of the seasons, peace in the land, safety from wild animals, health, victory over any enemy even against the odds, and His constant presence with them — you can read them in Leviticus 26.

The Lord didn’t just say He would enable them to survive. He wanted to bless them with abundant living. But there was a condition on it. Obedience. The people were required to follow His laws and statutes, which really consisted of worshiping Him with their whole lives and honouring and respecting their fellow man. If they could not live their lives in obedience to Him, then the opposite was true of their fate — hardship.

God hasn’t changed. He still wants His people to live abundantly. Do we honour Him with every part of our lives, and walk in obedience to His word? Do we love our fellow man as He would have us? I haven’t figured it all out yet, and I’m not exactly overflowing with abundance myself. But, I do believe this: that God wants me to prosper. I will keep living to the best of my ability for Him and wait for that blessing to flow.

Good on Purpose

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” [Romans 8:28 NIV]

In all things… In every circumstance and situation, whatever is happening in your life – all things are included in this simple phrase – nothing is left out. All cannot mean anything else but ALL.

God works for the good… He isn’t just sitting up on His throne in heaven watching the world turn below His feet with a languid smile or an angry frown. He is actively working and seeking ways to bless us and help us, to see us free of the things that trouble us, to put us in the path of blessings. He is NOT devising ways to make our life more difficult, or to punish us. He is working for our good.

Of those who love Him… There is no payment plan. We don’t owe Him anything in return … except love. How hard can it be to love someone who is working hard to bless you and help you? Not hard at all. It begins with gratitude and just grows from there.

Who have been called according to His purpose… The Lord doesn’t sit up on His throne and say “Eeny meeny miney mo, to whom will my blessing go?” and haphazardly pick some random person. He has chosen us and called us for a purpose and He works for our good ON PURPOSE.

So then, no matter what kind of crappy situation you might be finding yourself in, just trust in Him, knowing He is working on your behalf to bring about good through it, and soon you’ll be looking back smiling and loving God all the more for His provision. Can I get an AMEN? 🙂
