A Jealous God

The other week I talked about God spinning with joy. This time I want to talk about His jealous side. But really, it’s all about the same thing anyway–His love for us.

Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. [Exodus 34:14 NIV]

He loves us so much He wants us for Himself. He doesn’t want to share us with anyone else or anything else. As a result, He is jealous if we honour something higher than Him, if something in our lives becomes more important than Him.

The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and maintains his wrath against his enemies. [Nahum 1:1 NIV]

God’s jealousy is also a protective jealousy. It’s the kind of jealousy that will seek revenge for wrongs done against us. Watch out for the man who would dare mess with His love! I wouldn’t like to be in his shoes. Uh-uh!

This is one of my favourite wedding photos. I think it depicts that kind of protective jealousy very well. ‘She’s mine! Don’t you dare hurt her!’ All that’s missing from this pic is a sword in my hubby’s hand.

Knowing that God is jealous like that makes me want to keep Him as number one on my priority list–and it also makes me careful about how I treat others whom He loves just as much.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. [Matthew 6:33 NIV]
