I remember reading Faith in the Great Southland years ago. Being a fan of historical romance, I craved a novel of this kind set in my beloved Australia. I was so excited to discover Mary Hawkin’s works, and devoured Faith in the Great Southland and its sequels. Mary very quickly became one of my favourite Aussie authors. If you haven’t read any of her novels yet, then you’re missing out! Grab one today. 🙂

Mary Hawkins is a best-selling inspirational romance author with other 825,000 romance books in print. During the first few years of being published she also had five medical romance novels released by Harlequin Mills & Boon before concentrating on inspirationals for Barbour Publishing (Ohio). Return to Baragula is her first single title and the first released by an Australia publisher.

Mary was a Queensland farmer’s daughter, became a registered nurse and has a graduate diploma from a Sydney Bible College where she met her husband. Ray is a retired minister who is also a published author. They enjoyed ministries in Australia, three short term mission trips to Africa and two years at a church in England before settling in beautiful Tasmania. Over the years Emily Parker’s actions as a teenager have impacted not only her own life, but the lives of many different people.

Amanda’s Review:

Return to Baragula had me hooked from the opening paragraph, and until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning, I could not put it down. Not only did this novel contain romance, which I love, it was Australian through and through and held enough mystery and suspense to keep me turning the pages.

Mary Hawkins’ book never cease to engross me and this one was no different. She brings Australian country culture to life, so much so that I am  right there through every moment of the novel. I recommend Return to Baragula as a great read without hesitation.

A Day to Remember

I’ve mentioned all of the blunderings of my trip to Brisbane (see Blunder Road post). Now for the good bits.

The reason we went to Brisbane was to attend the Word Writers Fair–a day of books and learning more on how to write them. There was lots of information to be gleaned from people who have been writing for many years. I took plenty of notes and stored a lot of helpful tips in my head. Hopefully, I came away better equipped in my own writing.

The thing that stood out for me most this time, besides the awesome people I met, was the reminder that Jesus taught in parables–fictional stories that made a spiritual point. It was great to receive that encouragement once again–that fiction has an important place in the world, to draw people to Christ.

After an informative day, we had the pleasure of attending the Omega Writers CALEB Prize award ceremony/dinner, where I was amazed to find my book, The Game, had won the prize for fiction. Needless to say, I felt slightly overwhelmed, but incredibly honoured to have been awarded this prize. 

 

The other finalists for the fiction prize are wonderful writers, and I salute them. They are, left to right: Paula Vince, Mary Hawkins, and Meredith Resce. (That’s me on the right.) These women are an inspiration to me and I have and will continue to learn from them.
