Powerful Gentleness

Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.” [Psalm 77:19-20 NIV]

It always amazes me that the God who created the universe – all-powerful and all-knowing – could be interested in each person individually. But then, He does seem to be a God of small details. He numbers the stars and calls them by name (Ps 147:4) and they are only giant balls of gas. If He cares enough about stars to name them, perhaps He does care about each of us.

At times we see His mighty hand at work as in the parting of the Red Sea. An ocean is no more to Him than a tiny brook is to us. With a show of His arm, He parts the see for His people to escape. That was His power and might at work in an awesome miracle.

Most of the time, however, He leads His people gently – as though we are a flock of sheep, easily frightened and discouraged. He doesn’t always show up with a flash of power. He leads us through other people – friends, family, pastors – who teach us and guide us in His ways, just as He used Moses and Aaron in the beginning.

Think back through your life. In what ways have you seen the Lord’s hand guiding you, either in a powerful, dramatic way, or gently through other people in your life? I’d love to hear your stories. 🙂
